If we are talking about innovation, we cannot miss the secret and most powerful ingredient: ethics. One great example is nuclear energy, it can be used to generate cheap energy or to build atomic bombs. Every human activity must filter through the next question: “¿Is what I’m doing good for the world?” It doesn’t matter if you are a designer, barista or lawyer; this question is especially important in our times, when artificial intelligence is growing exponentially.
A.I. key concepts: time and optimization
Time: the only thing you cannot buy. Literally. We do so many repetitive activities on a daily basis that they could be automated. There is a group of people that think A.I. is dangerous, but I think exactly the opposite: it will automate mundane processes, things we do day to day and results in a tedious waste of time. If we use it well, we could optimize ourselves, which means we could be more productive and instead of doing an activity in eight house, maybe we use two or three. Goodbye to monotonous work and rushes, hello quality time for living. How? We will discover it on the go. I think there’s a possibility that we will have smart avatars that will make predictive decisions based on our reasoning. Wait, I have a meeting at 10 AM and cannot make it? Send my avatar! The whole point of having a life is to livszse, optimize our time and having the technology running in the background for us.
Experiences that technology can never replace
Eating! Food is ingested, but even more so, it’s one of life’s greatest pleasures. When I have a dinner with my friends, I don’t just feed on the ingredients on the table, but also from the experience of sharing them with my friends. This means quality time and a nourished soul. Instead of eating in under an hour because we’re on a rush, how about taking two or three? Furthermore, we live in The Information Age, which means we can instantly know where the best sushi in town is, or the freshest seafood. Eating goes back to being a holistic ritual.
The future is… creativity and experiences!
Decades ago, humanity envisioned a cold and minimalistic future. I think if I work everyday in a gray place, I won’t be as creative as if I worked surrounded by vegetation. We have lived in the wild jungle for millions of years, the green is a part of us. The atmosphere and flexibility are essential for inspiration, and that goes hand in hand with being outdoors and living wonderful experiences. How can someone be creative behind a desk from 9 to 5? People need to stimulate their creative being and inspiration can come in the form of wine or tacos. Eating, in the end, sharpens our senses.
Here and now, despite technological noise
Look for balance in life! It’s easy for technology to move the ground beneath us and for us to demonize its tools. For example, being alone together. A family eating in a restaurant and every member staring at their smartphone without talking. How many times have you seen this now overused scene? When I go out to eat, I want to talk to my wife, not scroll down work emails. The truth is we cannot multitask, we are packet switching beings: we go through one thing to the next. We are not capable of focusing on three topics at the same time, and in-between, time is falling through our fingers.
I travel to look at new images and to eat. I remember the places I have been by the places I have eaten in. It’s easy to flirt with selfishness and forget of our surroundings because our minds absorb us… and our gadgets. If we live an experience in order to show it off on social media, we are not really living, we are distracted. Beware of missing a moment, let’s never forget that we live in order to have memories.
